How long CBD stays in your system depends on how you take it. A 2018 systematic review found CBD’s half-life ranged from 1.4 to 10.9 hours after a mouth spray to 2 to 5 days with chronic oral use. For a drug test, CBD is rarely the question: screens look for THC, so the THC in the bottle matters.
These are research figures, not news, and they hold until newer studies replace them.
How long does CBD stay in your system, by route?
This desk read the abstract of Millar and colleagues’ review in Frontiers in Pharmacology on 8 October 2026. Of 792 articles retrieved, 24 reported pharmacokinetic data in humans.
| Route | Reported CBD half-life |
|---|---|
| Oromucosal (mouth) spray | 1.4 to 10.9 hours |
| Chronic oral use | 2 to 5 days |
| Intravenous | 24 hours |
| Smoked | 31 hours |
A half-life is the time for the level in the body to fall by half. It is not a detection window, and the abstract does not turn it into one.
Will CBD show up on a drug test?
The trial screen looked for THC-COOH, not CBD. Full-spectrum CBD carries some THC.
Dahlgren and colleagues enrolled 15 patients on a full-spectrum product with 0.23 mg/mL of delta-9 THC; one discontinued. The rest used a mean 0.80 mg of THC a day. After four weeks, 7 tested positive and 7 negative, and GC-MS showed the screen was often more sensitive than its stated 50 ng/mL limit. It was open-label, small and used one product.
What does a full-spectrum bottle add up to?
cbdMD’s full-spectrum tincture page, read on 8 October 2026, lists 2 mg of THC per serving and suggests one serving morning and evening. By our arithmetic from the brand’s figures, that is 4 mg a day, five times the trial mean. It is not a measured dose or a prediction. The label itself warns the product could make you fail a drug test for marijuana; “Farm Bill compliant” is the brand’s own claim.
THC-free products are another matter, since ND on a lab report is not zero: see our broad-spectrum post and the full-spectrum oil post for the per-container arithmetic. Read the lab sheet, not the label.
Frequently asked questions
Will CBD show up on a drug test? The screen in the trial this desk read looked for THC-COOH, a THC metabolite, not CBD. The risk comes from THC in the product. In that open-label trial, 7 of 14 people using full-spectrum CBD at a mean 0.80 mg of THC a day tested positive after four weeks. It was small and used one product.
How long does CBD stay in your urine? None of the three sources cited here gives a urine detection window for CBD itself. The 2018 review reports half-lives: 1.4 to 10.9 hours after a mouth spray and 2 to 5 days with chronic oral use. A urine drug screen asks about THC-COOH, which half the trial’s completers showed after four weeks of daily full-spectrum use.
What affects how long CBD stays in your system? Route and frequency, on the review’s figures: a mouth spray has a far shorter reported half-life than chronic oral use, from 1.4 hours against up to 5 days. The authors note a paucity of data and some discrepancy in the pharmacokinetics. In the drug-test trial, the only factor significantly linked to a positive THC result was creatinine, a marker of kidney function and hydration.
None of this is medical or legal advice, employer testing policies vary, and products discussed are not evaluated by the FDA. If a test matters to your job, the THC line on the lab sheet is the number to check.
